I love the Twelve Houses series. The stories are amazing and the characters, well let’s just say that I love them all. Sharon Shinn is a mystic herself, able to weave a web of honor, joy, wisdom, intrigue, selflessness, family, adventure, and deep awareness of what makes us human. You will read these books in a single gulp, then reread them multiple times to savor their nuances and deliciousness. If I could have one wish, I would ask for more books about Sennett, Tayse, Kira, Donnal, Cammon, and Justin. They are my family now...

I have cried several times during this tale (an unusual occurrence), I've bitten my nails (so to speak) quite a few times as well, and sadly, came to the end of the story. Luckily for me there is another tale in the series!
Interesting character development of Justin continues in this book. Ellynor is a new character in the Twelve Houses, Sharon Shinn series. Exciting story line!
This is another enjoyable book in this excellent series, focusing on Justin, send alone to report on the activity near Lumanen Convent, a bastion of Gisseltess power and relentless foe of mystics. Justin meets a girl from the convent, and a relationship evolves. Ellynor's precarious residence at the convent provides additional depth to the story line.
The Gillengaria books are some of my favorite by her, and Dark Moon Defender is among my favorites of the Gillengaria books. The romance is sweet and typical Shinn. Best, is the development of the relationship between the original six characters, while spotlighting Justin, who was my least favorite after Mystic and Rider, but quickly grew in my esteem with his actions in the Thirteenth House and even more so Dark Moon defender. That Shinn's story telling was so radically able to shift my perception of this character speaks volumes.
The third of this series, and a wonderful book. Justin comes of age, and all due to a totally unforeseen circumstance. We have all been places we don't want to be, because somebody we loved asked us for a favor.
The best of this 4 book series. Shinn truly embraces her characters and we get to see the depth and dedication of Justin. Shinn fills out his history and explores his emotions in ways not previously done in the first two books. The characters seemed more real, the story more engrossing and attainable.

Of the 4 this is hands-down my favorite! The pacing, the story arcs, all pieces of this story were impressive. Ellynor Alowa was a fabulous new character to meet and her powers were subtle, yet magnificent. She is not flashy, but she is also not a meek character. The blend and balance of Justin and Ellynor is perfect. Mystics and their gifts are present in this story, but it's not as much the focus as it is in the rest of the series - it was a refreshing break.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, as are all the novels in this series. The first book, "Mystic and Rider," introduces the main characters of the series in an exciting, fast-paced novel. The world of the Twelve Houses series is deftly described, woven skillfully throughout the narrative without pausing the plot development for descriptive asides. The mystic, Senneth, is the main character in "Mystic and Rider." Each subsequent book picks up the narrative from its predecessor, but from the point of view of a different character. It's very satisfying, adventurous, humorous at times, sad at others. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys good writing and well-drawn characters placed in an interesting world full of challenges.
