This is an excellent book! It takes a real hard objective view of the actual facts, and creates very clear arguments for/against the myths of the Confederacy. I really liked the way the arguments were raised and how evidence was presented that clarifies the actual state of affairs, debunks the myths and uses facts to correct erroneous thinking. This is a very well written and researched book and really enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend this book to an Civil War buff to get a better view and understand truth vs. myth and misinfomation.Product details

Bonekemper, who has written a biography of U.S. Grant, persuasively lays out the Myth of Lost Cause and proceeds to undermine its false foundations. The South seceded and formed the Confederacy to maintain slavery and white supremacy. Much of the "Myth" was formed to divert attention from the South fighting for these twin evils. R.E. Lee, rather than a brilliant general, was among the worst because he was a one-theater (Virginia) general and fought the wrong kind of war, both strategically and tactically. U.S. Grant, instead, was the best general of the Civil War, and one of the best in all of U.S. history. I highly recommend this book which establishes fact in place of the Myth of the Lost Cause. Good riddance, Lost Cause, you are justly dead and rightly buried by book.

I found this book very enlightening. Many of the details of this book showed me how ingrained into our culture the myth of the lost cause is. My admiration of Robert E. Lee diminishes but my admiration for Ulysses S. Grant couldn't be higher. This book is a worthy addition to my American Civil War book collection that now exceeds 30 volumes. The author did an incredible job with this book and I admire him for putting the real history front and center.
There's not much to be gleaned. I used the book as a source for a study on the Lost Cause, but even among those critical of it, this source takes the cake. I would suggest reading the Lost Cause sources (Davis's Rise and Fall, Bledsoe's Was Davis a Traitor, Dabney's Defense of Virginia, etc.) before reading this.
With relentless force - like U. S. Grant - Mr. Bonekemper dismantles the ideas of the ante bellum South's notion of "nice" slavery, that "state's rights" was the cause of secession, that the commanders of the North were inferior, and finally why history came to be written to support those erroneous claims. Hint in this case the losers wrote the history.
Confederate flag wavers will, I am sure, have little patience with this book. But a supplemental read is The Yankee Plague by Foote which chronicles the efforts of captured Northerners escape attempts in the waning year of the war. Most interesting was how lines of communication were developed by the slave population with the reduced presence of Confederate policing forces and how the slave population become an Underground Railroad of sorts to spirit our boys back to Union lines.
I enjoyed the careful item by item rebuttal of the long standing myths that portray the Southern secession as noble and the Northern response as a brutal response that destroyed the last vestige of nobility.
I gave the book a 4 star because it isn’t always great prose and sometimes repetitive. But it is a necessary read for anyone valuing a composite view of the Civil War.
