My day spent in bed with Nowhere To Hide was certainly not a day wasted. I loved this story. No cooking, no cleaning, no TV, just this great story. Thank you, bronchitis?!The characters were well developed and believable. For the most part, they were likeable people. Small-town folks that could be your neighbors. Just normal, everyday people, some with more baggage than others, some more dysfunctional than others, but all interesting, believable, and very readable. I especially adored Myra and Carl.
The locations were easily visualized and imagined, both NYC and Maine.
The story had just the right amount of romance and the romantic lead, Mike, was very appealing. The plot moved gracefully, nothing seemed forced or fake.
Another great feature for me was that this book was pretty clean. As I write this review, I really don't recall much in the way of foul language, if any. There are several typos, but they didn't distract me too much.
Nowhere to hide is a page turner. The story flows beautifully and I went along willingly and excitedly wanting to see what happened next. I highly recommend this book. It provided me a great day of escapism.

Nowhere to Hide Joan Hall Hovey Books Reviews
The author showed some skill at writing the suspense portion of the novel. It was predictable, but well done enough to keep me reading to see how it happened. But what drove me nuts was the lack of development of the romantic interest. No background, no development of feelings, no fill-in to speak of. Just one day, they're in love. I don't need explicit sexual scenes in a story, just something to make me believe they care for each other in a romantic sense. That did not happen. I also was a little confused about the timeline at first. I think it's set a few years back, not currently contemporary. All told, a fair weekend read.
I am an avid thriller fan and I feel I have stumbled upon a rare jewel....another Mary Higgens Clark if you will. This was a great book that hooked me from the first page and made me stay up late until the last page was read! I came upon this book when it was free, and I downloaded it with a grain of salt. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't put my kindle down! As I said, great book, fast read and I could not wait to download my second book from this author! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone who doesn't want to sleep at night. Lock the doors, check the closets and settle in for a good read!
I am not a real fan of romance in my mystery books but I don't mind them in Hovey's books. I am not really sure what you would call her books - mystery or romance? I think there is more romance than mystery but she does it in a way that isn't too frustrating.
If you prefer mysteries that keep you riveted or like a lot of action then I probably wouldn't recommend her books. This book had a little more action than some of her books though. If you prefer love stories & don't mind a little gruesome then I think you would enjoy her books.
All in all, a pretty good read. If you liked this book you will definitely like her other books. They follow the same formula to some degree but each situation is rather unique.
I started this book on Monday and read about 60% through. Alas, life intervened and I didn't get it finished until Thursday! I can definitely recommend it. The characters were crisp and likeable, the storyline exciting. So, why not five stars? That darned gun!
**SPOILER ALERT**. Only read this after you've read the book.... I have no idea why the gun was in the story. Ellen knew well that the killer had hid in her sister's closet; she goaded him into coming after her. She had the gun in her purse and walked around the house without checking things out first? Really, if she'd had a half a wit (and she did in all other instances), she would have had that gun with her at all times!!!! Of course, that might have made for a very different (and shorter LOL) story. Truly, reading that part I was almost pulling my hair out wondering what she was thinking!!! And although the killer took the gun, it never came into the story again <sigh>
This story had so much promise, but the writing got in the way. The storyline could have been better, what with predictable outcomes. The main character, Ellen Harris, a psychologist, becomes the victim of a serial killer who killed her sister. She refuses help and sets herself up as bait for the killer. Even with a handgun, she overestimates her abilities to deal with him. I would think that a psychologist would certainly realize how dangerous a serial killer can be. But not Ellen. If I needed psychological care, I darned sure wouldn't want her treating me. She makes stupid mistake after stupid mistake. Then there is the police department that apparently hasn't learned how to trace phone calls. The crux of the story lays in phone calls. No one thinks to trace them. Really? And the overdone descriptions throughout the book really turned me off. I really didn't care about the details of a room's decor or the colors and a person's dress, unless it really has something to do with the story. In this case, very little of this descriptiveness did. (Spoiler?) And when Ellen is bound and gagged, she can't think to pound on the floor to alert someone to her presence? I had to finish the book just to convince myself that Ellen would be saved and the killer, well, killed.
