Perdition The Dred Chronicles Ann Aguirre Books
Few authors can write despair as well as Ann Aguirre. She creates bleak landscapes, hardened characters and almost hopeless lives but gives her readers just enough warmth and light to make the reading of her tales possible. In her newest offering, Perdition, we are introduced to a prison spaceship for the worse possible criminals. The criminals are divided into various factions and these disparate groups are always engaged in battles for resources. Dred is the leader of the least noxious of the factions and recruits a newcomer, Jael, to her side when he is sent to ship. The book unfolds with various political machinations, a lot of bloodshed, enough humor to keep us sane and surprising moments of tenderness and loyalty to give us hope. Dred and Jael tentatively form a relationship that is based on mutual respect rather than the instalust dynamic that most authors in this genre utilize. The unfolding of their relationship and the stumbles towards trust and intimacy are believable and a little heartbreaking. Like most epics this book leads up to an ultimate showdown between Dred and her enemies with long, well written battle scenes. This is a well-developed world in which no character has only one face or motivation. The inhabitants of Perdition are reticent to share their stories which adds a layer of mystery. Aguirre skillfully weaves in some psychic abilities, genetic experiments and aliens so that readers are constantly reminded that this is a truly unique world in which the rules can change at any time.
Dred is now on my top ten list of favorite heroines. Many female authors struggle to write truly tough heroines. I find that many urban fantasy heroines are immature and more prone to bravado than bravery. This is no self-sacrificing warrior maiden who needs her alpha mate in order to succeed. Dred never boasts - she delivers. She is flawed and scarred and brave and cruel and beautiful. I eagerly await the next addition to the Dred Chronicles.

Perdition The Dred Chronicles Ann Aguirre Books Reviews
Good GRAVY, the utter hopelessness of life on Perdition was so well done. Not that I'd expect anything less of Ann Aguirre. She has a way of wringing emotion out of everything she puts her pen to and she aced the whole there's-nothing-to-live-for-so-why-not-go-hog-wild-on-a-floating-deathtrap-with-a-bunch-of-other-convicts thing.
Seriously. Dred's utter exhaustion over the day to day struggle of maintaining control over the inmates in her territory came through beautifully. Couple that with the fact she could show no weakness or she could very quickly lose her crown to someone with a little ambition and Dred doesn't have it easy.
Jael's appearance is part blessing, part curse. His ability to walk away from things that would kill others could help Dred's cause, but it also makes him dangerous. And he's not one to give his allegiance easily. I mean, he might give it on the surface, but he's always waiting for someone to betray him.
And the ship. *swoons* The broken, falling apart ship that is everything to these men and women. I'm in love with it. The hidden corridors and abundant ways one could end up dead walking down the halls tickled my fancy like you wouldn't believe. Perdition is a literal walking deathtrap. If enough systems fail, the inmates die. There's no fail safe to get them to safety if something goes wrong. They are entirely dependent on a city-sized ship that should have been retired and/or retrofitted ages ago and THEY HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO.
Most of the inmates have accepted they're going to die without ever seeing the sun again. Jael's crazy idea that he can escape isn't even a blip on Dred's radar. AND I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW THEY PULL IT OFF.
Throw in brutal territory disputes, bloody combat, and a Dread Queen who can't afford to show mercy and I am so SO smitten.

Dred is the leader of a faction of convicts on a prison ship in space; Jael is a new "fish" to the ship and harboring secrets about his past. Together, they rise up to overthrow their rivals and take control of new territories, learning to trust one another and forge new paths.
Not really. There are no new paths even after all the struggle; no HEA. They're still on board the ship, still incarcerated. The only difference is, by the end of the book they control new, larger territory and (I think) they had sex.
Pros Aguirre is an excellent author. She knows her grammar, form and spelling. She lays out the plot perfectly, chapter after chapter. She knows how to get into the characters heads and reveal their inner most thoughts, feelings and concerns. There are moments of excitement/battle, just enough to keep us hooked and wondering what's going to happen next; she knows human nature and why people react the way they do, why they betray--and why they love.
Cons She does not know how to bring two characters together with any spark or chemistry. The author is very much in love with her own cleverness in turning a phrase, but she lacks heart and soul.
This book, as others have said, is bleak. Sad. Violent. Disturbing on so many levels. There should have been an end, a ray of sunshine, something to give hope. But just as the characters have no hope by the end of the story, neither does the reader. I had hoped (kept hoping) this would turn into a redemption story at least---but there is no redemption. At all. None of the main characters are the least bit sorry for their crimes. Neither did she take it in the direction I expected---finding (by accident on their scavenging forays) a way off the ship, or a way to steer the ship somewhere else. It would have been predictable but at least it would have given the reader hope. Instead the author leaves us with two people who may or may not have been in love (hard to tell) but only found momentary comfort in each other and little else, with more bleak and violent and bloody for the future, however long that might last. The sex scenes were sadly lacking (IMPO)...not only lackluster but downright impersonal and without any true emotion---or real description. At all.
I wanted to give this book a higher rating but I feel as though I was on an incredibly violent roller derby course---battle, fight, blood, rest, betrayal, fight, battle, blood, loss, rest, repeat....and now we're back where we started and nothing has truly changed, and you know there's no finish line, no end for these characters, just another round of more battle and blood to infinity. And that made for a very unsatisfying read.
