Ninja at First Sight is a prequel to Penny Reid's book Happily Ever Ninja. The first half (or so) of this story appeared in P.R.'s Scenes From The City. If you didn't pick up 'Scenes' I feel bad for you because it was great and it's no longer available. Sorry. But, because Penny Reid is cool and knew everyone needed to know how freaking AMAZING Greg and Fiona were 'back in the day', she generously expanded upon and released their origin story for everyone.

AND IT IS AWESOME!

We learn that Fiona was as kind and thoughtful and intelligent when she was younger as she is in the future. Her soulful eyes and wise and watchful presence attract Greg. Greg, whose sense of humor is caustic and sarcastic, dry and wry, is always good for a shock-filled laugh, but underneath he's serious, driven and worldly.

"This is my chance to ruin you for anyone else."
"By telling me all about how terrible you are?"
"By being honest. By playing no games. When I tell you that I am a selfish bastard, I mean it. And when I tell you that you're wonderful and amazing and stunning and definitely the most extraordinary woman I've ever met, you'll know I mean that, too."

Greg is too smart and jaded for the college kids he's surrounded by and he's also insanely funny. But Fiona, despite her very shy demeanor, is pretty damn funny and quick, too so she makes a great match for him.

I didn't want this to end, I could happily read about Greg and Fiona forever and ever. Luckily, there's a sneak peek to the first chapter of Happily Ever Ninja and I was sucked in! I also howled in despair when it was done and I had to face reality that it was only a sneak peek. DANG IT!

If you want me to give it to you straight, I'll tell you that you don't HAVE TO read this between #4 and #5. Just like you didn't HAVE TO read Scenes From the City. BUT your life will be so much more enriched and fun and glorious if you do. Every one needs more of the Knitting crew and Greg is not to be missed--He's (MARK MY WORDS, HERE) going to be your book boyfriend for all of eternity. No, scratch that! "Your BOOK HUSBAND for all of eternity."

Ninja At First Sight An Origin Story Knitting in the City edition by Penny Reid Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I will admit, I was wrong. Very wrong. I didn’t get it. I didn’t understand how sarcasm could be sexy. Confrontation and debates annoy me, but yet Greg, who had all the turn off that I hate, became one of the best book boyfriends in the history of books. This guy could be abrasive a sand paper panties and then in the next breath make your heart go into sugar shock.

And Fiona. Fiona was compared to having a Grace Kelly/Audrey Hepburn look, but it permeated into her personality. She was utter class. Her logic, her compassion, her ability to see through other’s pains and not fall for the shallow, petty, prideful reactions, to me, that’s what made her an amazing heroine. It was like she was an old soul, and I couldn’t wait to see how she would approach the uncomfortable situations. I’m very heterosexual, but I may have a little girl crush (no pun intended because she’s only 5’2”) on Fiona.

Seriously, this book is happiness in words. It’s heart-beaming sunshine with pages. This is the type of book where if you don’t like it, well, that’s just weird.
I understand that this is a novella, but the way this story ended PAINED ME. I adored Fiona and Greg together - it was so fun seeing them meet and fall in love. HOWEVER, this ends right when things are getting good, and right when big, important, life-changing decisions are being made. It really really irked me that we don't get to see how main parts of their story plays out. This book ends with a cliffhanger, and then the next book with Fiona and Greg ('Happily Ever Ninja') picks up many many years later... Which essentially means that Penny Reid skipped over some of the best parts of their story!! As a reader, this is really frustrating to me, getting piece meal snippets, without the whole picture.

Anyway, despite this, I did love seeing this part of Fiona and Greg's story. Penny Reid's writing was excellent, and very entertaining, as always. I just really wish this didn't end with a huge cliffhanger... and then with a follow-up novel that completely skips over everything we wanted to know.
